Why Choose a Handcrafted Luxury Down Duvet?
Unlike machine-manufactured duvets, choosing a handcrafted duvet is far more impressive. Machine-made duvets are often made quickly and in bulk, without special care or attention.
Every item celebrates skillful craftsmanship and is thoughtfully crafted with love, care, and attention.
For these reasons, choosing a handcrafted duvet is considered more luxurious, personalized, and special to own.
What Does “Down” Mean in Duvets?
Down is a type of duvet filling. Buying a down duvet means your duvet is filled with the soft, outer edges of goose feathers.
These types of inner fillings don’t feel scratchy, nor do they rustle when you’re sleeping. Instead, down duvets feel light, soft, and extremely comfortable. It’s why they are considered the highest quality duvet fillings, especially for winter.
What is 100% Down?
A 100% down duvet is made of pure down and isn’t mixed with any other materials.
These duvets are light, lofty, well-insulated, and impeccably soft. They also maintain their fluffiness for longer, which means your Insel down duvet should remain plump for years after its guarantee.
Down duvets made from 90% down or less are scratchy and noisy. Because they are mixed with feathers, they are also sharper, which leads to holes forming in your duvet. This makes down fall out (leaving feathers all over the bedroom floor) and shortens the lifespan of your duvet.
Why Do We Only Use Goose Down, Not Duck?
We only manufacture down duvets of the highest quality to offer you a luxurious sleeping experience, every night.
At Insel, we use goose down, not duck, because goose is exceptionally higher quality. It has a higher insulating power (of around 15%), it’s softer, and it has virtually no smell.
Duck down is not as warm, soft, or pleasant to use as goose down. It’s also smelly, especially when it gets warm or wet.
What Makes Eiderdown So Luxurious?
Eiderdown is the most luxurious and exclusive variety of down. The feathers come from the protected eider duck, which resides in Iceland and Scandinavia.
At the end of breeding season, the feathers are handpicked from the eider ducks’ nest. Only a limited amount of feathers can be taken from the nests each year. This ensures the species are protected and its feathers are only taken sustainably.
It’s this reason why Eiderdown is globally considered rare and prestigious, therefore making it the most luxurious type of down duvet filling.
Our Island Collection is handcrafted using responsibly-sourced Icelandic eiderdown, most insulating and sought-after down in the world. Check here our Eiderdown duvet Collection
What Bedding is Best for Hot Sleepers?
Sleeping during hot weather can be problematic in any season, especially if you’re a hot sleeper.
If you feel the warmth easily, a Summer duvet (4.5 Tog) or Summer+ duvet (6.0 Tog) is best to use all year round.
Our down duvets are designed with breathable cotton and a baffle-box construction that evenly distributes cool air. A 100% down filling creates extra buoyancy, keeping you snug, but never sweaty.
What Tog is Best for All Seasons?
All-Season duvets (also known as a Spring-Autumn quilt) have a tog rating of 9.0. They are designed with ultra-light cotton for maximum comfort and breathability.
Our Spring-Autumn duvets contain 100% Goose down to guarantee insulation on chilly nights, and inspire a cool, fluffy feeling on warmer evenings.
How to Choose the Right Down Duvet?
Choosing the right down duvet for you depends on many factors. What’s ideal for one person can be different for another.
Check our ultimate down duvet guide to help you decide which down duvet is best to buy based on its size, tog rating, fill power, material and other extras.
What Tog Duvet Do I Need for Winter?
A down duvet with a 12.0 tog rating or higher is best for winter.
Tog rating essentially means how well a duvet insulates heat. Therefore, the higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet. Remember, winter down duvets can feel warm, without making you too hot. This is because you can also choose your fill power, which impacts how light or heavy it feels on your body.
If you want to feel warm at night, but not sweaty, choose a high tog rating with a high fill power.
