Detailed Guide to Best Winter Down Duvet
Tog Rating
According to our experience 12 Tog rating is perfect for all climates. Here you can compare all winter duvets from Insel.
The higher the tog rating, the warmer your duvet will be. For the best winter duvet, choose a tog rating of 12.0 or above. Because these duvets have a cassette box construction, the high insulating down will be spread evenly across your duvet. This will keep your entire body warm throughout the night.
Choosing the best tog rating for you is one of the most important parts of finding the right duvet. If you or your bedroom gets very warm at night, you may prefer to use a spring/autumn 9.0 tog duvet instead of a winter duvet. If you can’t find the perfect tog rating for you, Insel offers bespoke duvet design services. We can craft your perfect duvet for every season.
When choosing a luxury Insel duvet, each product comes with handstitched corner loops. Instead of purchasing a winter duvet and a summer duvet, you can transform two summer duvets into a winter duvet.
Simply enfold two summer duvets on top of each other and tie them together using the corner loops. This will create a duvet that’s just as warm and snuggly as a single winter duvet.
Fill Power
We love light down duvets, and that’s why for our collection we use only pure down starting with 700 up to 900+ Cuin fill power.
Ideally, you want to choose a winter duvet with a high fill power of 600 CUIN or more. These duvets are warm, but feel light and breathable.
A duvet with low fill power won’t necessarily feel cooler, but it will feel heavier to sleep in. This typically makes them unsuitable for people who feel cold when falling asleep, but get hot during the night.
Down duvets with a high fill power are customarily considered better quality. This is because they use finer, more insulating down, and therefore don’t need as much of it to provide warmth.

Percentage of Down
We are clear here. Only 100% goose down is option we recommend to everyone to invest in for blissful sleep and longevity.
When choosing a high-quality down duvet, it’s best to opt for a product with a high percentage of down. Preferably, you should choose a duvet with 100% down filling.
This means that the down is pure and isn’t mixed with other materials, like feathers, synthetic inlay, or another type of filling.
A 100% down filling is widely known to be better quality. They feel lighter, warmer, and impeccably soft. They also don’t lose their down over time, so you’re duvet stays lofty and plump for longer.
Only duvets with mixed down (of 90% filling or less) will fall out. This is because the feathers are sharper and therefore can break through the duvet linings. When they do, the down falls out, leaving feathers all over the bedroom and causing your down duvet to flatten quicker.
It’s a noticeable difference when choosing a 100% down duvet filling compared with 90% or below, both in terms of feeling and durability.
Class of Down
Pure down is our choice. Check out our collection of 100% pure Hungarian goose down duvets
In adherence to the European standard, all down has its own designated class. From 1 to 3, down duvets are graded based on the quality of their filling.
Class I is the most deluxe down you can get as it only uses new down. This means you’ll have the softest, fluffiest down filling in your duvet.
Class II down and Class III down are also available. Class II uses up to 15% recycled down and/or feathers and/or other fillings and Class III down uses more than 15% of other fillings in addition to down.
At Insel, we only use Class I down in our luxury duvets because of its exceptionally high quality.
Manufacturing Quality
A well-manufactured duvet will last longer, feel better, and provide an overall superior sleeping experience than a poorly constructed duvet.
Manufacturing quality is important when it comes to choosing the best down duvet for winter.
Handcrafted from the finest artisan fabrics, Number 1 in Europe German manufacturer, Sanders, constructs our cotton through a meticulous 21-step process.
Each duvet is handled with utmost patience and care, taking more than 24 hours to craft. Over 7,000 hidden stitches are weaved to perfection with passion and skill.
